In the first chapter of *5 Centimeters per Second*, the heroine Akari stands in front of the old airport terminal, waving a white handkerchief, watching the plane carrying the protagonist Takaki take off. The terminal is a low concrete building with a wide parking lot in front, set against a blue sky and distant runway.
