In the first part of *5 Centimeters per Second*, "Cherry Blossom" (Ōkashō), Takaki and Akari stand on a remote seaside shore with a white lighthouse behind them. The setting sun paints the sky orange-red as waves crash against the rocks. They recall their childhood promise, and Akari mentions that "cherry blossoms fall at a speed of five centimeters per second." The camera pulls back from their silhouettes to reveal the vast ocean and horizon.
