Scene at Shikotan school
In *Giovanni's Island*, the young brothers attend the only school on the island. The schoolhouse is a two-story wooden building with a bell tower, with a lone horizontal bar and cherry trees by the playground. In winter, snow covers the ground; inside the classroom, children listen to the teacher while the snowy harbor is visible through the window.
