In *The Garden of Words*, teenage Takao Akizuki skips school on a rainy day and passes through the platform of a massive railway hub. The camera pans over the commuting crowd, his gaze fixed on distant skyscrapers, a lunchbox in hand. The humid rainy-season atmosphere, arched glass canopy above casting gray light, and the mechanical sounds of arriving trains below. This is his solitary space before fate intertwines him with Yukari Yukino.
