After-school canal
In *The Flowers of Evil*, Takao Kasuga and Sawa Nakamura often talk by this narrow concrete canal. The canal is flanked by residential walls, with slow and murky water; cicadas can be heard in summer. Takao broods over Baudelaire’s poems here, while Nakamura stands on the edge, looking down at the stream and coldly discussing the concept of “evil.”
