Alleyway
In *The Flowers of Evil*, Kasuga Takao and Saeki Sawa often meet or pass each other in this narrow alley. The walls are mottled gray plaster with rusty corrugated roofs, the ground is damp with occasional puddles, and the air is thick with decay and oppression. Overhead, tangled wires on utility poles and low-roofed old houses complete the scene.
