The Cat and Elf Frontispiece
In *Edo no Elf*, a classic frontispiece illustration depicts an elf girl and a calico cat facing each other in front of a shrine's torii gate. Sunlight filters through the leaves onto the stone steps, the cat's tail held high, and the elf girl crouches down to reach out to the cat. Behind them stands a vermilion torii gate with a sacred rope.
