In *Suzume*, chasing the mysterious cat Daijin through Tokyo, Suzume arrives at the end of a bustling shopping street. She stops before a massive two-story vermilion gate, its central feature a giant paper lantern inscribed with bold black characters. Flanking the gate are imposing statues of guardian deities, and beyond it stretches a lively commercial district. Suzume pauses here before resuming her pursuit.
