In *A Letter to Momo*, Momo walks alone along a breakwater stretching toward the sea, with thick grass on both sides. Ahead lies a quiet sandy beach, with small islands and hills in the distance. It is here that she meets three mischievous but kind-hearted yōkai and begins her adventures with them.
